Driving to town the other morning I heard a true story about a homeless man. He told how miserable his days were while living on the street, especially when it rained. He hated the rain. Carrying all his earthly belongings in a bag, sleeping during the day because it was warmer and moving around at night because of the cold, was made even worse when it rained. He would watch the people who could afford to take the bus and think to himself how "normal" they were. One day another homeless man sat down beside him. This guy had rags on his feet, a terrible odor, and hands that were beyond dirty. He said the guy looked at him, put his dirty hand in his pocket, pulled out a dollar and some change, handed it to him and said, "here, you look like you could use this." That really shook him up. He took the money and bought a bus ticket to the psychiatric hospital. He's been clean for ten years and lives in a nice apartment. Every time it rains he puts his hand in his pocket and touches the key to his home and is reminded of how much he has to be thankful for. Scripture tells us be be thankful in everything. If it's raining on your day do you have a key in your pocket?
